11 August 2011 - Sovereign Health Care donation funds summer workshops for local children

A local charity’s summer programme of activities is in full swing after receiving a donation of £6,780 from Sovereign Health Care. Skipton Extended Learning For All (SELFA) - which supports local disabled, disadvantaged and vulnerable children - was awarded the funding by the Sovereign Health Care Charitable Trust, after the Trust’s board became aware of the charity’s needs.

One of the first workshop’s run as part of the summer programme was a graffiti art workshop designed to inspire and develop creativity. Led by local artist and teacher, Nicky Gifford, the aerosol-art activity aimed to help local youngsters create their own piece of contemporary art. Using graffiti materials, the budding 'Banksys', aged 11 to 19 years old, also learnt about the roots of graffiti, which dates back to ancient Greek times.

Emma Pears, SELFA's co-ordinator and fund-raiser was thrilled by the positive response she received from the Sovereign Health Care Charitable Trust when she first approached them about sponsoring an event.

She said, “Sovereign Health Care has made this amazing art activity, and indeed all our events, possible.  Without them our summer programme would not have been able to run. This workshop is just one of many positive and fun ways youngsters are able to socialise, learn a new skill and channel their creativity.”

Caroline Cundey, from Sovereign Health Care, said “We are delighted to see these young people have a chance to try something new and creative in a fun yet safe environment. We remain committed to supporting local communities and charities like SELFA, who provide children and young people with such opportunities.”
