150 years of supporting health and wellbeing
2023 marked 150 years of Sovereign Health Care. From our roots in 1873 as the Hospital Fund of Bradford, we’ve always been committed to supporting hospitals and health in our local communities. Every year we donate to charities, the NHS and community organisations supporting local people – and in 2023 we gave more than ever to our communities to celebrate our landmark anniversary. £1.5 million donated to the local community
In 2023, as part of our anniversary celebrations, our Community Programme donated a record £1.5m to local charities and causes supporting health and wellbeing. £970,000 of this was donated to Yorkshire NHS Trusts including hospitals in Leeds, Bradford, Wakefield, Harrogate and Airedale. 67,000 customers
Serving both businesses and individuals, Sovereign is one of the longest-established health care cash plan providers with more than 67,000 customers.
£7.7million paid in customer claims
2023 was a record year for customer claims and we paid out over £7.7 million to support the health of our policyholders. Our 2023 customer survey revealed that 94% of our customers would recommend us to family and friends.
438 days in our new office
31 October 2023 marked the first anniversary of the move to our new office at The Waterfront in Shipley. The new space offers a modern, collaborative, open plan way of working, which better suits the needs of the Sovereign team. In early 2023, Sovereign purchased The Waterfront, allowing us to diversify into other business areas whilst utilising our capital reserves effectively.
1 new Chief Executive Officer
Following a handover with outgoing CEO Russ Piper, and a period of regulatory approval, Neil McCallum was officially appointed as CEO in December 2023. Joining the business from Benenden Health and with almost 20 years’ experience in the financial services and private healthcare, Neil looks forward to building on what Russ has achieved, while bringing his own experience and perspective to take Sovereign forward at a time when health and wellbeing has never been more important.
We’re extremely proud of our achievements over the last 12 months and look forward to continuing to support people and the wider community throughout 2024 and beyond.
