After months spent in hibernation, spring has brought with it new freedoms and the ability to get out and about with friends and family. Although the thought of heading back out there can be a little daunting, we like the idea of trying something new every couple of weeks to slowly ease ourselves back to a normal routine.

To give you some ideas, we’ve brought you a list of the activities that we’re most excited to enjoy over the next few weeks and months:

Visit the zoo

Zoos are one of the first venues to reopen, and we couldn’t be happier. There are some great options, including Yorkshire Wildlife Park and Chester Zoo, which celebrated the birth of a new baby giraffe in March. With social distancing measures safely in place, a visit to the zoo feels like a great activity for all the family!

Invite friends over for a BBQ

As lockdown eases and people from different households are allowed to gather again, this must mean BBQ time! Dust off the grill, throw some bangers on the barbie and get cooking – here are some healthy BBQ recipes for you to try!

Have thrills at a theme park

If one thing screams out the fun we’ve missed over the last few months, it’s a theme park! The UK has some great options, from toddler-friendly Thomas Land and CBeebies Land to the rollercoaster thrills of Alton Towers and Lightwater Valley, to name just a few. Many of these can be visited in a day, or you can stay the night close by. If you’re a Sovereign member, you could get access to discounts for days out like this via Sovereign Perks.*

Go camping

Campsites are a fantastic, inexpensive way to get away from home and lift your spirits. From the English coast to national parks and countryside, the options are endless. One of our favourite destinations is a dark sky area, including some areas of North Yorkshire, Northumberland and the Lake District, where you can see the stars and planets in all their glory.

Get active

Organised outdoor team sports are now back up and running, along with all outdoor sports facilities including tennis and basketball courts, sports pitches, outdoor skateparks and outdoor swimming pools. Indoor facilities such as leisure centres, gyms and indoor swimming pools are also open, and you can exercise in groups of up to six or a larger group from up to two households. This gives lots of options to get active again, giving a boost to both physical and mental health and wellbeing as well as a much needed social outlet.

Hit the drive-in

One of the hits of last summer, drive-in cinemas are now back in action, with some great options in Yorkshire and beyond. Bradford Bulls stadium, Kirkstall Forge, Skipton Castle, Ripley Castle and Harewood House are just a few of the venues bringing us the Hollywood treatment this spring and summer. You can even enjoy fresh wood fired pizza and treat boxes delivered to your car. To find out more, check out Blue Sky Outdoor, The Luna Drive-in Cinema and What An Event.

We hope we’ve given you some inspiration to head out and enjoy our new freedoms. More guidance about the roadmap out of lockdown, staying safe, and what’s permitted at each stage is available on the Government’s website.
